The Board of Directors met last night at the Friendly Fox. Thank you to the directors and guests who attended!

It was a productive meeting! Here is a link to the minutes, which will be officially approved at our July meeting.

The biggest topic of discussion was the Block Party on August 10th.There will be small committees in charge of various aspects of the Block Party. Would you like to volunteer to help that day or help on a committee? Read the committee report here and then contact us at Southwood_Park@yahoo.com!

Carpe Diem School Opening Delayed

The Carpe Diem charter school was originally expected to open at the Summit campus this fall. That has now been pushed back to 2014.

Southwood Park’s Annual Dirt Day is May 4th!

It looks like the weather will hold, so Dirt Day will be this Saturday, May 4th. There will be two locations: Crestwood at Sunset; and South Wayne at Maple Grove. If needed, the rain date will be May 11th.

Southwood Park has purchased quality soil for residents’ use for more than two decades. It is a spring ritual for our gardeners! We purchase high quality tri-mix soil from Felger’s. It is suitable for yards, garden beds, and pots.

So get your soil for Mother’s Day planting this Saturday! We would like the drop sites to be emptied quickly.

Please take what you need, but don’t be a dirt hog. And while we shouldn’t have to say this, we will anyway: the soil is for current-on-dues Historic Southwood Park residents only! Please don’t drive through the soil, block traffic or dump any soil or clay from your yard at the drop sites.

Spring Beautification Day

Southwood Park residents are invited to join with neighbors for the Spring Beautification Day on April 7th.

We will meet at 1PM at the Roundabout and tidy up and mulch the various pocket gardens in the neighborhood. Bring some work gloves, a water bottle, and a friend or family member to help. Everything should be completed by 3PM.

Foster Park Little League 2013 Registration Forms Here

Dear Foster Park Little League Parents,

Foster Park Little League’s 2013 registration is now open. Our traditional registration format has changed to make it more user-friendly for your busy schedules. Instead of dictating which two Saturdays you need to sign up your child, you now have almost two full months to sign up prior to March tryouts. (Players must be registered prior to tryouts in order to try out.) If your child played in 2012 at Foster Park, you will not need to copy your child’s birth certificate; we already have it from last year.
Proof of Residency
Instead of later asking for a past proof of residency that you may not have at hand, you now have an easy opportunity to copy your current (prior to February 1, 2013) bills, statements, and other documents (semester report cards are acceptable). Annual proofs of residency are requirement by Little League and must be valid during the February 1, 2012
to February 1, 2013 window. Providing three different, valid proofs of residency seemed to be the biggest problem last year. Many people brought a March utility or cable bill, but it was too new (Little League’s rule – not ours) to be acceptable.
Registration process
Registration is now open. There will NOT be an in-person sign-up this year at The Summit. Before the March tryouts, submit via U.S. mail, email, or by simply dropping off copies (Foster Park needs to keep these) of forms:
· Completed registration form (attached)
· 3 proofs of residency (see the following link for examples: http://www.fosterparklittleleague.com /Registration%20forms/LittleLgProofResidency[2].pdf )
· Player’s birth certificate (if your child did not play in 2012)
· Payment – cash, check written to Foster Park Little League, or credit card (write type of card, name of cardholder, credit card number, security code, expiration date, and zip code on registration form).

Tryouts
Tryouts will be held on Saturday, March 2, and Saturday, March 9. They will tentatively be held at South Side High School. All players must attend at least one tryout (even returning Major League players).
· All softball players: 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
· Baseball 6-8-year olds: 10:00-11:00 a.m.
· Baseball 9-10-year olds: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
· Baseball 11-13-year olds: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
· Baseball 14-15-year olds: 1:00 – 1:30 p.m.
· T-ball players DON’T try out.

2013 Association Invoices and Ballots Mailed

2013 Historic Southwood Park Neighborhood Association yearly invoices and Board of Director ballots were mailed January 22nd.

Under the Amended Restrictions and Covenants approved by Allen Circuit Court in 2006, each home in Southwood Park and Westover Place is subject to an annual maintenance fee. All such fees are payable on a calendar year basis. If not paid, they become a lien against the real estate, together with 6% interest, attorney fees, and other costs of collection. Simple translation: the dues are mandatory. If you procrastinate, the costs will increase.

This year’s amount is $38.50, due on February 15, 2013. The vast majority of homeowners in the Association are diligent about making payments. Thank you!

If you owe for more than one year, the mailed invoice will show the correct amount. If you do not receive your mailing within a week’s time, we need to talk. It could be something as simple as the Association not having your forwarding address.

Also included in the mailing is a ballot for the 2013 Board of Directors election. Three Directors will be elected to three year terms. One will be elected to fill a one-year vacancy. Please read the candidates statements and vote for five. There is also a space for you to send us your concerns that the Association should address this year. Ballots are due February 9th.

Board of Directors to Meet November 7th

The Historic Southwood Park Neighborhood Association Board of Directors will meet November 7th, one week before the originally scheduled date. The meeting will be at 7PM in the meeting room at the Friendly Fox Coffee Shop, 4001 South Wayne Avenue.
This will be the final meeting for 2012. As always, all residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The first section of the meeting will feature a discussion about a variance for a new Verizon cell phone tower on the Summit campus and an Open Forum for residents’ concerns.

The Great Tree Canopy Comeback Will Plant at Foster Park on November 3

Dear Neighborhoods,

On Saturday, November 3, we invite you and your neighbors to partner with the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department and the Friends of the Parks to purchase and plant new trees for our parks and public spaces at the Great Tree Canopy Comeback 2012.

At a time when our trees are being lost faster than they are being replanted (over 6,000 lost to date) our community is now facing the devastation of the Emerald Ash Borer for the 6^th year. One in four of our city street trees are ash and will soon be gone. Over the last ten years, 2,230 trees have been planted. We need your help to plant 250 more in 2012!

The tree planting fun will begin at 10 am at several different sites: Foster Park Golf Course, McMillen Park Golf Course, Heatherwood Park , New Haven , Metea County Park and Repka Park in Aboite Township . We will also be planting Street Trees near McMillen Park on Plaza Drive and Central Drive . Please contact Robin Holley at 260-417-3804 or robin_holley@comcast.net and let her know where you would like to help plant and how many neighbors you’re bringing with you. Or, if you would rather just donate to the cause, there are many giving levels, starting at just $50.

Trees are essential to our urban landscape. Your leadership and the actions you take will provide great examples for others to follow. As we reach out to the public for help in this crisis, it’s comforting to know that we have the support of our neighborhoods.
